What is CBD?

Strapped for time? No worries, watch an overview of this post.

“So you’re saying CBD won’t get me high?”

CBD has been making headlines, with consumers praising its medicinal properties for managing many physical and mental health issues from anxiety, cancer, muscle pains and different epileptic seizures. Although there are many articles out there, people are still unaware of CBD and its legal status in the UK.

We are family

When you hear the word cannabis, what comes to mind?

Some will think of the days of free love and nostalgia from college or university days. And it’s no secret that the word Cannabis has negative connotations because of the association with Marijuana.

Cannabis is the plant from which well-known species such as; Hemp and Marijuana derive; there are numerous compounds in the Cannabis plant, including Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound, and consumers have claimed that taking CBD creates a feeling of calm and relaxation; THC is the psychoactive compound that creates the feeling of being high.

That leads to the legalities

Despite becoming illegal in the UK in 1928, Cannabis has a long history of being an alternative medicine. Surprisingly, many reports suggest the transition from legal to illegal was due to social and racial stereotypes and not the psychoactive properties. However, Cannabis (Marijuana) has since moved up and down the UK’s list of controlled drugs and currently sits as a Class B drug.

Both Hemp and Marijuana plants contain Cannabidiol; however, Hemp contains high amounts of CBD and less THC, and Marijuana contains high amounts of THC and less CBD. Furthermore, because Cannabidiol cannot get you high, it does not fall under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Every country has its laws on the percentage of THC allowed in products sold, and Cannabidiol is legal in the UK as long as the THC levels are below 0.2%.

For this reason, you are likely to see more Hemp products advertised across a range of industries, including; beauty, hair, health and textiles.
